Engineering, fabrication, robotics, and education

From load-bearing replacement parts to a working robotic arm and classroom-ready electronics — a look at the range of work coming out of K-Smitty Labs, organized across four divisions.

Featured Case Study

Six-axis educational robotic arm — V1 prototype

A working desktop robotic arm built to make mechanical design, electronics, and motion programming tangible for students.

Problem

Robotics kits used in education are often either black-box toys with no real engineering inside, or expensive industrial platforms out of reach for a classroom. There was a gap for a robotic arm students could actually study, build, and understand — mechanically and electrically.

Approach

The arm was designed in CAD from scratch, iterated through multiple 3D printed revisions, and assembled with servo-driven joints controlled by an Arduino Uno R3. Motion is programmed axis by axis, with the mechanical structure, wiring, and control logic all built and documented as a teaching example rather than a finished consumer product.

Technologies

  • • CAD & mechanical assembly
  • • 3D printing
  • • Servos
  • • Arduino
  • • Electronics
  • • Motion programming

Status: Working V1 prototype with a fixed gripper claw. Future revisions are exploring quick-change end effectors and expanded educational potential — from teaching kinematics to giving students hands-on control programming experience.
